Pharmaceutical
Product Positioning Example Project: Investigate a Pharmaceutical
Product's Efficacy We were involved in a project investigating whether
a pharmaceutical product for diabetes treatment resulted in liver toxicity. We
were asked to review medical claims data from millions of patients, isolate diabetic
patients taking one of several types of diabetes products, and determine whether
outcomes for patients on one diabetes product were different than for patients
on other diabetes products. We developed an appropriate methodology and the patient
outcome measures. Experience - Partnered with many of the
leading pharmaceutical manufacturers and supported clinical trial Phase 3 work
efforts and Phase 4 pharmacoeconomic research, including the following manufacturers--Bristol-Myers
Squibb, Wyeth Ayerst, SmithKline Beecham, AstraZeneca, GlaxoWellcome, Eli Lilly,
Warner Lambert, and Johnson and Johnson.
- Performed pioneering work in pharmacoeconomic
research to define patient outcome measures using medical claims data, including
the following--early termination of product use, monotherapy versus combination
therapy, drug switching, drug titration, and adverse medical side effects (e.g.,
gastrointestinal events, renal events).
- Developed a patented system that
integrates all inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, and prescription drug claims
data into episodes of care by medical condition (Cave et al, Patent Number 5,970,463).
The system was designed to perform pharmacoeconomic research.
- Obtained
from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Ph.D. in Health Planning and
Policy, and a Masters in Public Health in infectious disease epidemiology--providing
a strong clinical, statistical, and methodological background.
